When is Makar Sankranti?

Makar Sankranti is a sacred Hindu festival. This year it will be celebrated on 15th January across different states.

North India

In North India, the festival is celebrated by taking a holy bath in the Ganga. Various fairs are organized at the ghats, and people engage in charitable acts.

South India

In South India, Makar Sankranti is celebrated as a four-day festival. It is also known as Pongal, which includes the tradition of making rangolis and dishes made with rice.

Punjab and Haryana

In Punjab and Haryana, the festival of Lohri precedes Makar Sankranti. Lohri is celebrated with dance performances like Bhangra and Gidda.

Rajasthan

In Rajasthan, Makar Sankranti is known as Uttarayan, and is celebrated over two days. Uttarayan is observed on 14th January, and Vasi Uttarayan on 15th January.

Makar Sankranti is celebrated in Gujarat with much enthusiasm. Kite flying events are organized during the festivities.

Assam

In Assam, the festival of Makar Sankranti is locally known as Magh Bihu. It is celebrated over a week, with a variety of local dishes.

Makar Sankranti is celebrated as Khichdi Sankranti. A traditional khichdi dish made from flour and jaggery is donated during the festivities.
