India’s Mars Orbiter Mission (Mangalyaan) made India the first country to successfully reach Mars orbit on its first attempt, a milestone in the space world.
Mangalyaan was launched on November 5, 2013, from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota, aboard the PSLV-C-25 rocket.
The mission was achieved with a low budget of approximately $73 million, making it one of the most cost-effective Mars missions ever.
The primary objectives were to develop the technologies required for interplanetary missions, study Mars' surface, morphology, and atmosphere, and study potential signs of life.
The spacecraft carried six scientific instruments, including a Mars Colour Camera (MCC), a Thermal Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (TIS), and a Methane Sensor for Mars (MSM).
Mangalyaan successfully entered Mars orbit on September 24, 2014, after a journey of approximately 650 million kilometres.
The mission received global acclaim for its technical success and cost-effectiveness, establishing India as a significant player in space exploration.
