The Karnataka government has announced plans to rename a district to “Bengaluru South,” reflecting local sentiment. The decision, driven by regional leaders, is set to be implemented soon despite some opposition.
In a recent decision by the Karnataka government, the Ramanagara district will now be known as “Bengaluru South.” This change was approved during a Cabinet meeting led by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.
Ramanagara, situated around 50 km from Bengaluru, includes the taluks of Ramanagara, Magadi, Kanakapura, Channapatna, and Harohalli. According to Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister H. K. Patil, the renaming was done in response to local demand. "The locals' requests were the basis for the decision to rename the Ramanagara district as Bengaluru South," Patil clarified. “Only the district name will change; everything else will remain the same.”
The push for renaming the district gained momentum recently, following a memorandum submitted by a delegation led by Deputy Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar. Shivakumar, whose home district is Ramanagara, advocated for the change by highlighting that residents identify closely with Bengaluru. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah confirmed that the matter was discussed and decided by the Cabinet.
However, the decision has sparked controversy. Former Karnataka Chief Minister and Union Minister H. D. Kumaraswamy criticized the move, suggesting it was intended to boost real estate prospects in the area. Kumaraswamy, who oversaw the creation of Ramanagara district in 2007, has vowed to reverse the renaming if he returns to the Chief Minister's office.
The Karnataka Revenue Department will now begin the process of implementing the new district name.
