Previously known as monkeypox, Mpox is likely to be declared a 'Global Emergency' and labeled the deadliest by the WHO. Find out its causes, symptoms, and treatments.
Mpox is caused by a virus similar to the smallpox virus and is a member of the Orthopox genus. It generally spreads from close contact with an infected person or animal.
Mpox has similar symptoms to smallpox, including rashes, fever, swollen nymph nodes, headache, chills, fatigue and muscle ache.
There is currently no specific treatment for Mpox. It's a self-limited disease meaning it goes away without a treatment. If needed, the doctors prescribe similar drugs to smallpox.
The best way to prevent Mpox is to get vaccinated. Limit contact with infected individuals and animals to prevent the spread of Mpox.
Mpox is rarely fatal but there are chances of it leading to other complications such as pneumonia and brain infections which can cause death if not treated properly.
