As per some beliefs, Lord Rama and Sita were in the jungles when Sita got thirsty and asked Rama to find water. A beautiful peacock appeared and asked the duo to follow it.

Peacock's sacrifice

The peacock plucked its feathers to make a trail for Rama and Sita to follow. When they finally reached the clear water spot, they found the peacock lying on the ground.

Honoring the sacrifice

Lord Rama promised the peacock that he would honor his memory and sacrifice and in his next reincarnation as lord Krishna, he wore a peacock feather on his crown.

Other beliefs

Some believe that the peacock feather was given to Lord Krishna by Radha as a token of remembrance. At the same time, one belief states that Balram gave it to his younger brother.
