The Indian Constitution was enacted on 26 January 1950

For the first four years, between 1950 and 1954, Republic Day Parade was organized at four different locations, i.e., Irwin Stadium, Kingsway, Red Fort, and Ramlila Maidan.

Kartavya Path

Rajpath was formerly known as Kingsway. It has now been renamed to Kartavya Path. Since 1955, the Republic Day Parade is being held at the same location.

The Defence Ministry receives assistance from approximately 70 other departments and organizations in making the event successful.

The President’s convoy

The President, accompanied by bodyguards and horsemen, arrives in a special car. The Republic Day festivities begin with the arrival of the President’s convoy.

Flag hoisting ceremony

During the flag hoisting ceremony, everyone pays homage to the Indian flag. Following this, the national anthem is played.

21-gun salute

During the 52 seconds of the national anthem, a 21-gun salute is performed. This act is carried out by 7 cannons of the Indian Army known as pounders.
