Karpoori Thakur was known for his contributions to uplifting the backward classes in North India. He was also popularly referred to as ‘Jan Nayak.’
Karpoori Thakur was born on 24 January 1924 in Samastipur. His parents were Gokul Thakur and Ramdulari Devi. The village he was born in is known as Karpoori Gram in his honour.
Karpoori Thakur served as the Chief Minister of Bihar twice and held the position of Deputy Chief Minister once.
Karpoorti Thakur became a member of the All India Students Federation as a school student.
Karpoori Thakur was renowned for his simplicity and humility. Despite having a successful political career, he often travelled by rickshaw.
Karpoori Thakur also participated in the freedom struggle. He was also recognized as an inspiring teacher.
Karpoori Thakur will be posthumously honoured with the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour, on 26 January 2024.
