MS Swaminathan was a renowned Indian agricultural scientist who was credited for his significant role in India’s Green Revolution.
MS Swaminathan was born on 7 August 1925 in Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu. He was an Indian geneticist and international administrator.
Witnessing the damaging consequences of the Bengal famine of 1943, MS Swaminathan chose to study agriculture for higher studies instead of pursuing medicine.
MS Swaminathan did extensive research in the Netherlands, Europe, United Kingdom, and the United States of America.
MS Swaminathan was appointed as the director-general of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research and a secretary of the Government of India in 1972.
MS Swaminathan held significant positions in IRRI in the Philippines, Planning Commission of India, World Wildlife Fund, the United Nations Millenium Project, and many more.
Former President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam nominated MS Swaminathan to the Rajya Sabha in 2007.
MS Swaminathan’s aim was to give recognition to women farmers. He introduced The Women Farmers’ Entitlements Bill in 2011; however, later, the bill lapsed.
