The Central Government has announced that the late political leader Chaudhary Charan Singh will be conferred with the prestigious Bharat Ratna award. PM Modi shared this news on X.
Chaudhary Charan Singh was the 5th Prime Minister of India. He served his term from 28 July 1979 to 14 January 1980. Born in Hapur, UP, in 1902, he passed away in 1987.
Chaudhary Charan Singh dedicated his life to the welfare of Indian farmers. In his political career, he never compromised his morals and principles.
Chaudhary Charan Singh opposed Jawaharlal Nehru’s proposal for cooperative farming during the Nagpur convention in 1959. He considered it as anti-farmer.
He often preferred to travel to his offices on-foot.
Several accounts suggest that despite holding significant political positions, he personally covered the expenses such as petrol and telephone bills.
Despite an extensive political career, Chaudhary Charan Singh only had Rs 470 in his bank account at the time of his death.
