India
The Indian government banned several Chinese applications and products such as TikTok, Shein, and more in 2020. It was done for safety and security measures.
The ban did not stop Shein from becoming the world's largest online-only fashion company in 2022. It is an extremely popular fast-fashion brand that is growing everyday.
Shein currently has an evaluation of $10 Bn. Shein was founded in 2008 and launched in India in 2018. It revolutionized the fast fashion in India, however, had to leave in 2020.
Online brands like Urbanic, The Souled Store, and Cilory tried but were not successful in filling the fashion void as they failed to match the popularity of Shein in India.
Another e-commerce company, Meesho also adopted the affordable fashion and content-led strategies by Shein to find success in the India fashion market.
Shein is making a comeback in India via the partnership with Reliance Retail. It won't be a standalone app but will have Shein's products on Reliance Retail's application.
Isha Ambani is the Director of Reliance Retail Ventures Limited (RRVL) and will also be managing the Shein and Reliance partnership.
