Twelve coaches of the Howrah-New Delhi Poorva Express derailed near Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh early on Saturday, injuring at least 15 people. According to the EC, the polling percentage till 6 pm was 62.10 in Nagina, 68.77 in Amroha, 62.14 in Bulandshahr, 61.25 in Hathras, 59.60 in Agra, 62.80 in Aligarh, 60.56 in Mathura, and 61.16 in Fatehpur Sikri.

Some of the popular candidates up for election today are Union ministers Jitendra Singh, Jual Oram, Sadananda Gowda and Pon Radhakrishnan. Former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda and former ministers Dayanidhi Maran and A Raja, and DMK leader Kanimozhi are also among today's candidates. Actor-turned-politician Hema Malini is the star candidate from Mathura in Uttar Pradesh.

The Lok Sabha poll in Vellore constituency, Tamil Nadu are likely to be cancelled due to excess use of money power, according to reports. A war of words has ensued between Congress president Rahul Gandhi and Delhi chief minister and AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal over the formation of a possible alliance between the two parties ahead of the Lok Sabha elections 2019. The poll panel had barred the UP chief minister for 72 hours starting from 6 AM on April 16. His rival Mayawati has been barred for 48 hours.

The move comes after the Supreme Court rebuked the poll panel for ‘having limited power to act against such leaders’. A bench headed by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi had asked the representative of Election Commission to appear before it tomorrow.
