Transgenders have come out in protest in Tamil Nadu against Vijay Sethupathi for portraying them in a bad light in his latest film Super Deluxe.
Tamil Nadu: Despite receiving rave reviews, Tamil movie Super Deluxe is now courting controversy. The Vijay Sethupathi starrer was released on March 29 and has been appreciated for addressing several pressing issues and word of mouth from audiences is making it more popular.
Directed by Thiagarajan Kumararaj, the movie shows Sethupathi playing a transgender person named Shilpa, for which he is getting an overwhelming appreciation for his portrayal of a transgender person. However, the transgender community from Tamil Nadu is not too pleased with the portrayal. The community has alleged that Super Deluxe shows them in a bad light.
A popular Tamil entertainment website quoted them as saying, "We had good regard for Vijay Sethupathi, but he has spoilt it by acting in this film. He has spoken dialogue about a transgender person kidnapping children. Can anyone recall of such a crime committed by a transgender person? After hearing the script, Vijay Sethupathi should have rejected it."
In the movie, Vijay's character Shilpa admits to kidnapping two children and selling them for money. Later, she found those children at a traffic signal with physical disabilities and resorting to begging. This particular scene hurt a few transgender people, who are now demanding his arrest. They have also questioned the notion of their community kidnapping or harming children.
Besides Vijay, the movie also features, Malayalam star Fahadh Faasil, Samantha Akkineni and many other actors.
