Ajmeri Khatun, a resident of Hariharpur Kala village in Bihar's Siwan district, married in 2016. Four years later, her husband Salauddin suffered a paralysis that left him disabled in one leg and unable to work. This led to a severe financial crisis for the family. Despite these challenges, Ajmeri showed remarkable resilience. She began selling clothes and makeup items, and gradually saved up enough money to buy property of her own. Let’s read about her inspiring journey.

Background

Ajmeri Khatun initially supported her family by working as a labourer in the fields and in homes. When her husband's paralysis rendered him unable to work, managing even basic needs became a challenge. With no farmland or proper housing, the situation became dire, and there were times when the family had to go to bed hungry.

Family's hope

Ajmeri Khatun sought ways to support her family and found an opportunity in 2020 when she was selected for the Sustainable Livelihood Scheme. She received makeup items worth Rs 20,000 and support for seven months. With this, Ajmeri launched a makeup business and, after saving some money, bought a sewing machine. She taught her disabled husband to sew, and together they began earning decent income.

Future dreams

With the additional funds, Ajmeri Khatun set up a grocery shop at her home, which her husband also helps to manage. She also purchased four goats, which have now grown to eleven. Balancing makeup sales, running the grocery shop, sewing, and goat rearing, Ajmeri has managed to build a stable livelihood. She has also managed to construct a small two-room house for the family. Her monthly income has grown to Rs 10,000-12,000. Ajmeri's future dream is to establish a wholesale grocery store for her husband.
