The Indian Navy is all set to circumnavigate the globe with the second version of the 'Navika Sagar Parikrama' expedition. This expedition, a symbol of women's power, self-reliance, and courage, will commence on October 2, 2024, from INS Mandovi, Goa. The journey will cover a distance of approximately 21,600 nautical miles (approximately 40,000 kilometers). Lieutenant Commander Dilna K and Lieutenant Commander Roopa A will embark on this challenging expedition.

Reliant on Wind Energy for 8 Months

This expedition will span over eight months. The most remarkable aspect of this journey is that these officers will rely solely on wind energy without any external assistance. The voyage will traverse the treacherous routes of three prominent capes - Cape Leeuwin, Cape Horn, and the Cape of Good Hope. The maritime conditions in these regions are extremely unfavourable, making this mission even more challenging.

Expedition Launched in 2017

The 'Navika Sagar Parikrama' expedition was launched in 2017 when a team of six women officers successfully circumnavigated the globe. That expedition set a remarkable example of women's power and proved that Indian women are capable of facing any challenge. Now, in this second version, both women officers are accepting this challenge in double-handed mode, a first for India.

Captain Dilip Donde Was the First Indian to Circumnavigate the Globe

Both women officers underwent rigorous training for the voyage. Captain Dilip Donde (Retd) and Commander Abhilash Tomy (Retd) played a crucial role as official mentors. Captain Dilip Donde was the first Indian to circumnavigate the globe in 2009-10, and Commander Abhilash Tomy achieved a historic feat by completing the Golden Globe Race in 2022. Both retired officers have been involved in the training of both women officers.

This Journey Will Chart the Course for the Future

The unpredictable and challenging conditions at sea make this mission even more daunting. Facing storms, high waves, and adverse weather conditions is a significant challenge, but both officers are fully prepared for it. Their self-confidence and patience will be their greatest strengths during this mission. This is not just a journey but will also set a direction for the future. This expedition will inspire all those women who are facing difficulties in fulfilling their dreams.
