Indian Ministry of Health recently posted 6 factors that can contribute to cardiovascular diseases on X (Twitter). It was to spread awareness and educate people about the deadly factors and how they can influence your health. Deaths by cardiovascular diseases have increased in India since 1990 from 2.26 million to 4.77 million in 2020. These are alarming numbers and call for action to be taken immediately.

The biggest factor for cardiovascular diseases among Indians is consumption of tobacco. Ischemic heart disease is the leading cause of death in India, which again showcases the urgent need to take action and spread awareness about cardiovascular diseases and how to prevent them. Here, let’s take a look at some of the major factors responsible for cardiovascular diseases posted by the Ministry of Health and how to prevent them.

1. High blood pressure

Also known as hypertension, puts extra pressure on the heart, damages arterial walls and causes the narrowing of arteries, hindering the flow of blood. It can lead to conditions like heart attack, heart failure, and strokes.

2. Tobacco use

Smoking damages blood vessels, accelerates the formation of plaques in arteries, and leads to blood clots and reduced oxygen in blood.

3. Diabetes

Diabetes can damage blood vessels and the nerves responsible for controlling the heart. High sugar levels in the blood can cause the formation of plaque and increase the risk of heart attacks and strokes.

4. Physical inactivity

Lack of physical activity can result in a weak heart with not enough power to pump blood effectively.

5. Excess weight/obesity

Excess weight can cause high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and diabetes which are major contributors to cardiovascular diseases.

6. Stress

High stress can cause high blood pressure, and increase stress hormones and unhealthy coping mechanisms like overeating, smoking, and more which leads to cardiovascular diseases.

To prevent these factors one can take these measures to reduce the threat of cardiovascular diseases and ensure a healthy and strong heart.

1. Healthy diet

Any healthy choice starts with a healthy diet. A balanced diet and cutting off saturated fats, sugars, and trans fats can make a huge change.

2. Regular Physical Activity

Try to keep your body active and devote a few minutes every day to exercise or do any physical activity like swimming, running, trekking, and others.

3. Quit smoking

Smoking is extremely dangerous and one can seek professional help, counselling, support groups, nicotine replacement or other medications to help them quit smoking effectively.

4. Maintain a healthy weight

Maintaining a healthy weight can be the key to a strong heart. Make sure you consume a balanced diet, exercise regularly, and invest in healthy snacking.

5. Manage Stress

Stress management can be difficult but trying to indulge in relaxing activities like meditation, yoga, spending time in nature and trying out new hobbies can help to reduce stress.

6. Regular Health checkups

Make sure you’re monitoring your blood sugar levels, blood pressure, and cholesterol levels to maintain a healthy weight and healthy lifestyle.
