BJP Member of Legislative Council N Ravikumar said that Congress leader DK Shivakumar was selling tea in Shivamogga. How did a tea seller amass over thousand crore rupees, he questioned.
Bidar: BJP MLC from Bidar C Ravikumar took a dig at Congress leader DK Shivakumar saying that he was selling tea in Shivamogga before he got into politics. He further questioned how DK Shivakumar grew to be such a millionaire.
Ravikumar lashed out at the Congress members for accusing the BJP of instigating the raids conducted by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on the Congress troubleshooter, who is currently in ED’s custody.
The BJP MLC slammed Congress members and said, "He (Shivakumar) was selling tea in Shivamogga. How can he be the owner of thousand crore rupees. We too want to become rich but what path did he choose to become rich?," he questioned.
He further added, "Let Shivakumar speak in front of the ED and explain how he became rich. There is no need to worry as everything will be exposed after the probe," he said.
However, it is not sure if the reference to Shivakumar selling chai (tea) was a jibe because, the Congress too had criticised PM Modi as ‘chaiwala’ and had questioned his qualifications to become the Prime Minister.
However,PM Modi took the jibe positively, using it in his favour to began programmes like Chai Pe Charcha. Today, people in India fondly call the PM as chaiwala.
Apart from politics, the term chaiwala changed the life of an 18-year-old Afgani, Arshad Khan, who became a celebrity overnight after his photographs were published by Jiah Ali. The Pakistani Chaiwala's photos became viral on social media and reports said that he was also being approached for modelling assignments.
