Born in Perth, Australia, Melanie Perkins attended Sacred Heart College and later enrolled at the University of Western Australia but dropped out. At the age of 14, she used to sell handmade scarves to support her studies. At 19, she launched a new venture called Fusion Books, which enabled students to design their own yearbooks using online tools. Through sheer dedication and perseverance, Melanie gradually established herself in the realm of business.

While teaching design programmes to her fellows, Melanie noticed the challenges students faced with available design tools. This inspired her to conceive the idea for Canva, a user-friendly design tool that simplifies creativity. She needed investment to get started but faced rejections from over 100 investors who failed to see the potential in her idea. Despite the setback, she remained determined. In 2012, she teamed up with Cliff Obrecht and Cameron Adams to officially launch Canva.
