Dubai's RTA introduces an air taxi service with a minimum fare of 350 dirhams, promising shorter journey times and a merger of helicopter and airline technology for future urban mobility.
Dubai has introduced an innovative air taxi service, marking a turning point in urban mobility. This pioneering effort, led by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), is intended to transform city mobility. In a few years, residents of Dubai will be able to fly across the city with air taxis for 350 dirhams (about Rs 8000) per passenger. During an interview with UAE-based news source Khaleej Times, the flying taxis developed by US-based aviation firm Joby provided a taste of how they will seem.
Supported by Joby Aviation, the RTA Air Taxi conducted its first flight in Dubai.

The air taxis have been constructed so that passengers can experience breathtaking aerial views of Dubai. Furthermore, the service guarantees smooth and comfortable travel without getting stranded in heavy city traffic. According to authorities, the air taxi would shorten travel time between two locations in Dubai by 70%.
Driving from Dubai International Airport to the Palm Jumeirah would take at least 45 minutes and possibly up to an hour. However, an air taxi would only take 10 - 12 minutes to travel this distance. Each air taxi may carry up to four passengers and a pilot. There is also plenty of storage room for luggage.
These air taxis have been developed to provide smooth and uninterrupted rides for Dubai residents. It is also safe because it flies between 500 and 1000 meters in the air. However, the height at which it flies depends on the distance traveled.
In long-distance trips, the air taxi may fly at a height of 1000 meters, however, in short-distance travels, it may fly at just 100 500 meters. A commercially licensed pilot would fly the air taxis after completing a 6- to 8-week customized training program.
The training would ensure that the pilots can safely and efficiently navigate the air taxis. Passengers can book air taxi flights through Joby Aviation's mobile app. They might also reserve an Uber ride via the app. Even if there is just one passenger, the air taxi will take off.
Surprisingly, air taxis are developed as a hybrid of helicopters and airplanes. These would have helicopter takeoff manoeuvres while promising an aeroplane-like flying experience.
