In the year 1906, the first national flag was hoisted in Calcutta. It featured green, yellow, and red colours, with ‘Vande Mataram’ written in the centre.
In 1907, changes were made to the national flag. This flag featured saffron, green, and yellow stripes.
Annie Besant and Bal Gangadhar Tilak introduced a new flag in the year 1917. The flag featured green and red colours, including the Union Jack. It also had moon and stars.
Another change took place in 1921. A person from Andhra Pradesh presented this flag to Gandhiji, which featured a spinning wheel, and green, red, and white colours.
In 1931, the national flag underwent its fifth modification. The design featured saffron, white, and green stripes, with a spinning wheel in the centre.
The new flag of independent India was officially adopted in the Constituent Assembly meeting in 1947. The Ashoka Chakra replaced the charkha in the national flag.
