Rakesh Sharma was the first Indian to travel to space, flying aboard the Soviet spacecraft Soyuz T-11 in April 1984.
During his space mission, Indira Gandhi, the Prime Minister of India at the time, called him and asked how India looked from space.
Rakesh Sharma responded with the phrase “Saare Jahan Se Achha”. This is a line from a popular patriotic song written by Muhammad Iqbal.
His reply was a tribute to the beauty of his homeland. “Saare Jahan Se Achha” is a renowned song in India.
Rakesh Sharma spent 7 days, 21 hours, and 40 minutes in space during his mission.
His successful mission marked a significant achievement for India’s space programme and boosted its international standing in space exploration.
Upon returning to Earth, Rakesh Sharma was celebrated as a national hero and received numerous accolades for his contribution to space exploration.
