Walchand Hirachand Doshi established Premier Automobiles in 1945, setting up India's first car manufacturing facility. The first car was made in 1949.
Walchand Hirachand, born in 1882 in Solapur, Maharashtra, was a prominent Indian industrialist. He made significant contributions to Indian industry and founded the Walchand Group.
He earned a BA degree from Mumbai University and, after graduation, joined his family’s cotton and money lending business. However, he was not satisfied with this line of work.
When he wasn't interested in continuing with the family business, he left it and began working as a railway contractor. He worked for several government departments.
He established both the first modern shipyard and the first aircraft factory in India, making substantial contributions to the country's industrial development.
The British government was his largest client, yet he continued to support the Indian independence movement.
Walchand Hirachand Doshi is remembered as the father of Indian transportation. He passed away in April 1953 in Gujarat.
