Dipa Karmakar created history on May 26, 2024, by becoming the first Indian to win a gold medal at the Asian Senior Championship.
She started her training in gymnastics at the age of 6. She is the first Indian female gymnast to compete in the Olympics.
Dipa Karmakar drew inspiration from gymnast Ashish Kumar, who clinched India’s first gymnastics medal at the Commonwealth Games.
Over the years, Dipa has also mastered the Produnova vault, regarded as one the most dangerous manoeuvres in gymnastics.
Dipa won the gold medal in the vault event at the FIG World Challenge Cup held in Turkey in July 2018.
Dipa Karmakar had previously served a 21-month suspension. The suspension was imposed until July 10, 2023.
On Sunday, Dipa Karmakar created history at the Asian Gymnastics Championships 2024 held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. She is the first Indian to achieve this feat.
