Chennai: The Madurai Division of Southern Railway on Wednesday flagged off the much-awaited passenger train service on Pamban rail bridge to Rameswaram island, which had remained suspended since December 4.
The railway services were suspended on the bridge after noticing cracks on more-than-a-century-old Scherzer’s span track. After completing the retrofit work, Southern Railway engaged Structural Engineering Research Centre (SERC), Chennai, to conduct stress level tests on the bridge. With the green signal earned, the train services resumed.
