Rameswaram: India pays tribute to people’s President Abdul Kalam on his death anniversary

Rameswaram: July 27 marks the fifth death anniversary of India’s Missile Man, Dr APJ Abdul Kalam. In 2017, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated a national memorial in Dr APJ Abdul Kalam’s honour in his hometown Rameswaram. Ramanathapuram district collector Veera Raghava Rao unveiled a statue of Dr Kalam and offered floral tribute at his memorial in Pei Karumbu, Rameswaram. Few personalities from various walks of life and the public paid tribute to Dr Kalam at the International Memorial Hall Campus. Politicians took to social media to express their feelings about the former President of India.
Born as Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam, he was India’s 11th President from 2002 to 2007. On July 27, 2015, Dr Kalam lost his life while delivering a lecture at the Indian Institute of Management Shillong. He collapsed and died from an apparent cardiac arrest on 27 July 2015, aged 83. Dr Kalam was referred to as ‘People’s President’.
