Chennai: 35 years ago, Sukumaran came to Tamil Nadu from Kerala looking for a job. In Tamil Nadu, he worked in several tea stalls under appalling conditions. Later, Sukumaran decided to set up a new tea stall of his own.
As Sukumaran was impressed by the 8-hour day demand of the labour movement, which emerged in Chicago in 1864, Sukumaran decided that he would not exploit his employees. He named his tea stall Chicago tea stall, which is located in a residential corner of Adyar. Employees, who have worked for 300 days in a year, get two-gram gold ring as reward. This year too, he took his staff to a five-star hotel on May Day and gifted them a gold ring.Â
