Ladakh, known for its breathtaking landscapes and vibrant culture, has become a sought-after destination for travelers. Yet, beneath its picturesque beauty lies a hidden risk for those unprepared for high-altitude conditions. Chennai resident Kirubakaran Rajendran recently shared his unsettling experience in Ladakh, which transformed what was meant to be a serene family holiday into a struggle for survival.

Mr. Rajendran’s trip was planned with excitement, especially for stargazing in Leh, where the clear skies offer a stunning view of the Milky Way due to low pollution. However, their arrival at Leh Airport, situated more than 10,000 feet above sea level, revealed a harsh reality. The high altitude quickly took its toll, leaving the family grappling with severe breathing difficulties.

In a series of posts on X, Mr. Rajendran detailed the struggles they faced. Oxygen levels decrease significantly at higher altitudes, he explained. “The air in Leh and other high-altitude areas is substantially thinner than at sea level. Even daily tasks grew taxing, and visits to places like Hanle and Nubra Valley—both requiring passage—became difficult over treacherous high passes such as Khardung La Pass at 18,000 feet—proved overwhelming.

Despite allowing two days for acclimatization, Mr. Rajendran and his family found themselves unable to adjust and ultimately had to cancel their plans and return home. "It was supposed to be a relaxing vacation, but it ended up being an unforeseen challenge, he said.

The story, which has garnered over 6 million views, has sparked a range of reactions. While many appreciated the insight and shared their advice, some criticized the lack of prior research into the challenges of high-altitude travel.
