The MMTs are a part of the government’s Jal Marg Vikas project (JMVP) that aims to develop the stretch between Varanasi to Haldia (West Bengal) for navigation of large vessels weighing up to 1,500-2,000 tonnes. 

The Union Home Ministry has written a letter to the ministry of external affairs (MEA) in this regard, stating that renaming West Bengal to Bangla sounds similar to Bangladesh. This might lead to confusion in the international arena over Bangla and Bangladesh, it said.

 

Though some Congress leaders are eager to support the Trinamool Congress (TMC), a majority of leaders are opposed to the idea. They are against TMC trying to suppress Congress in West Bengal.

The bus, which was heading to Kolkata, crashed into the cement fencing of a bridge before breaking it and falling into the Dakatia khal canal near Gojarmore at around 9 am, district police chief Sukesh Jain told news agency PTI.
