Walled city of Jaipur was formally accorded World Heritage City status on Wednesday by UNESCO. Director-General Audrey Azoulay presented the World Heritage Certificate for this Rajasthan city to the state's Urban Development and Housing (UDH) minister Shanti Dhariwal. With this, Jaipur becomes the 38th site in India to get the UNESCO World Heritage Status. The city is also home to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites Amber Fort and Jantar Mantar. The Elephanta Caves in Mumbai is a huge tourist attraction. Every year thousands of people from across the country and the world visit the cave. In 1987, the Elephanta Caves in their entirety and the forested areas around them were declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Legislation to shield the Elephanta Caves has existed since the 1950s, but the state government has turned a blind eye leading to the degradation of the spectacular carvings in the caves.
