Thantri  

On January 2, the chief priest of the Sabarimala temple Kandararu Rajeevaru had closed the doors of the shrine for performing Suddhikalasam (purification rituals) after it was confirmed that two women entered the temple through the back gate and had the darshan of Lord Ayyappa.

 

Mata Amritanandamayi said different temples had different traditions, which even Shankaracharya and Sree Narayana Guru allowed. She said about Sabarimala that the Ayyappa deity's tradition must be decided by none other than the thantri, head priest and devotees

Travancore Devaswom Board member N Vijaykumar said they would seek an explanation from the thantri for conducting purification rites. Following this incident, a huge protest was witnessed in front of the Travancore Devaswom Board office.

Devotees have been asked to move away from the Sannidhanam to perform Suddhikalasam in the temple. The chief priest, Kandararu Rajeevaru closed the temple doors according to the instruction of the Thantri
 

Hindu organisations are bringing 1,500 women to protest in Sabarimala with Irumudikkettu if women below 50 attempt to enter Sabarimala. The police will, however, not allow the devotees to camp at Sannidhanam for more than 24 hours.

Kerala chief minister mentioned that a thantri doesn't have any right to take any such decision. A thantri can only take decision on pujas of the temple, Vijayan said. Pandalam Palace representative Shashi Kumar Varma expressed his resentment over Vijayan's remark against the thantri.
 

Travancore Devaswom Board president A Padmakumar said, 'As far as Sabarimala is concerned, the thantri society is the parental authority. If there is any problem in Sabarimala, they will find a solution to it.'
