A five-judge Constitution bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra was unanimous in striking down Section 497 of IPC dealing with the offence of adultery, holding it manifestly arbitrary, archaic and violative of the rights to equality and equal opportunity to women

Observing that most countries have abolished the law, three judges in the five-member Constitution bench held that making adultery a crime is retrograde and would mean "punishing unhappy people".

The Supreme Court further added that the 12-digit Aadhaar number will not be mandatory for any competitive exams or CBSE exams as well.

 In its verdict, the apex court declared the Centre's flagship Aadhaar scheme as constitutionally valid but struck down some of its provisions, including its linking with bank accounts, mobile phones and school admissions.
