Calling it Mission Shakti, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that India has entered an elite club of space powers by destroying a low earth orbit satellite using a missile. There are only four countries in the world that have achieved this feat. This includes America, Russia and China while India stands at the fourth place.

ISRO never got too much of attention of the UPA government. During UPA era, ISRO’s budget hardly increased. From around Rs 4,000 crore in 2009 to Rs 5,500 crore in 2014. What is it seeking credit for?

Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that India successfully test-fired an anti-satellite missile by shooting down a live satellite, describing it as a rare achievement that puts the country in an exclusive club of space super powers. 

India used indigenously made Anti-Satellite Weapons (ASAT) for hitting the live satellite target, which was on a ‘Low Earth Orbit’ at a height of 300 kilometers from the earth’s surface
