On the occasion of Republic Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid homage to the fallen soldiers at National War Memorial (NWM) near India Gate. This is the first time the Prime Minister of the country is laying a wreath at the NWM on the occasion of the Republic Day.

As the defence minister, Singh will face the challenge of strengthening the combat capabilities of the Army, Navy and the Air Force due to changing regional security matrix and geo-political dynamics

Yogesh recalls that the inception of the design came from the idea that martyrs are immortal. Memorials are usually a place where we mourn death, but NWM should be a place where we celebrate the life of the soldiers and pay respect to the sacrifices made by them.

The memorial pays befitting tribute to our soldiers who laid down their lives defending the nation during Indo-China War in 1962, Indo-Pak Wars in 1947, 1965 and 1971, Indian Peace Keeping Force Operations in Srilanka and in the Kargil Conflict in 1999

The Nation War Memorial, which has been constructed to honour around 26,000 soldiers, will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 25

The National War Memorial was approved by the Modi government in October 2015 and had a budget of Rs 176 crore. Located at India Gate C-Hexagon, the NWM apart from having artificial lighting for evenings will also have a walking plaza and a 14 lakh litre water storage tank for rainwater harvesting.
