According to reports, the gunfight took place along the Assam-Nagaland border, as the security forces raided the militants' hideout.

Bikramjit Singh, who is alleged to be an operative of militant organisation Khalistan Liberation Force, was arrested on Tuesday in connection with the attack. Avtar Singh is identified as the second accused.

Six men were abducted and shot at by suspected militants at Kheroni in Tinsukia district. Four of them died on the spot, one at a hospital and the sixth is injured. 

Sources said that six young men were abducted by unidentified gunmen and were later shot near Brahmaputra river. Four people died on the spot and one succumbed to injuries on the way to the hospital. Another injured person was rushed to the hospital. 

Investigations found an influential quarter of the then BNP-led government, including Tarique Rahman, masterminded and sponsored the attackers - the operatives of militant Harkatul Jihad al Islami (HuJI)
