Indira Canteens in BBMP limits will provide food packets, breakfast, lunch and dinner for poor people, migrants and labourers

The Karnataka government has decided not to give free food to public in Indira canteens as efforts to provide free food to the needy at their doorstep has already taken place. The Edgbaston cricket stadium in England will be used a testing centre for Covid-19 suspects.

While former chief minister Siddaramaiah criticised the BJP government for its alleged move to reduce free donation of rice and curb funds for Indira Canteens, the BJP has hit back saying there is no such move

Karnataka deputy chief minister G Parameshwara has ordered weekly inspections at all Indira Canteen outlets. This, after BJP corporator Umesh Shetty alleged that the quality of food served in Indira Canteen was substandard.

Quality of the food served at Indira Canteens in Bengaluru is now under scrutiny. Lab reports say that certain items served in the canteen are not fit for consumption. But Congress-led municipal corporation continues to deny it.

 

The Appaji Canteen dedicated to former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda was opened by JD(S) MLC TA Sharavana with much fanfare last year as a fitting reply to Siddaramaiah's Indira Canteen. The eatery, located in the JD(S) Head Office, JP Bhavan in Sheshadripuram, is now shut. Sources say this was due to Vaastu issues

Indira Canteens were set up by the previous Congress government to provide food for poor people at low cost (as low as Rs 5 for breakfast and Rs 10 for lunch and dinner).

The Bengaluru Administration encroached a playground to build an Indira Canteen and is likely to attract a contempt case.
