The convicts in the Nirbhaya gang rape case sought stay in their execution on the grounds that they haven't exhausted all the legal remedies. The execution scheduled for February 1 has been stayed until further orders. The lawyers challenged me, and the rapists got their way, said Nirbhaya's mother Asha Devi.
 

The development comes a day after the Supreme Court dismissed a plea filed by another convict, Mukesh, challenging the rejection of his mercy plea by the President. The four convicts in the case are scheduled to be executed on February 1 at 7am.

The Supreme Court said that if a convict in the Nirbhaya gang-rape and murder case files any petition, it will be the court's top priority, since the rapists are going to be executed on February 1. Mukesh Kumar Singh's counsel asked to approach the registry of the court for an urgent listing of his plea against rejection of mercy petition by the President.

Tihar Jail authorities said they will be conducting dummy execution of Nirbhaya convicts before January 22. All the four convicts will be hanged on January 22 at 7 am.
