The Indian government on Monday abolished Article 370 of the Constitution that gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir and bifurcated the state into two Union Territories -- Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh. 

A day after Article 370 was scrapped, several political leaders, including various opposition leaders lauded the Centre and claimed that it was a much-needed decision for Jammu and Kashmir

India is witnessing a landmark move on the issue of Jammu and Kashmir in 2019, but the issue was first brought up in the Parliament in 1984 by former chief minister of Tamil Nadu J Jayalalithaa 

"The United Nations appeals to both sides (India and Pakistan) to exercise maximum restraint to ensure that the situation (in Kashmir) does not further deteriorate," UN chief Antonio Guterres's spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said.

The Rajya Sabha approved a resolution scrapping provisions of Article 370 of the Constitution that gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir (J&K). The Lok Sabha has passed the bill with 367 votes in favour of it.

 

 

“I cannot support this, this procedure is not democratic, said West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee”, reacting to abolition of Article 370 and arrest of Mehbooba Mufti and Omar Abdullah 

 

Section 144 has been imposed on Jammu and Kashmir and as a result no trucks are allowed to and from the Union territory. Good trains, even those that carry perishable goods have been stalled at Jammu border for the last two days.
