The decision immediately led to protests from hardliners and demonstrations erupted against the apex court in places such as Lahore, Peshawar and Karachi.

The Supreme Court has modified the former order of bursting crackers only between 8 pm and 10 pm during Diwali, following the Tamil Nadu government petition, which mentioned that the festival was celebrated in the morning of November 6.
