'There was an abject failure by the police to investigate the violence which broke out in the aftermath of the assassination of the then Prime Minister Smt. Indira Gandhi is apparent from the several circumstances highlighted herein above,' the high court said quoting multiple lapses

The two-judge bench of the Delhi high court lauded the witnesses for having stood their ground. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), departing from the negative media glare that it received in recent times, got a pat on the back.

The court also upheld the life imprisonment sentences of ex-Congress councillor Balwan Khokhar, retired Navy officer Captain Bhagmal and Girdhari Lal. The sentences of former MLA Mahendra Yadav and Kishan Khokhar have been increased from three to 10 years of imprisonment.

Kamal Nath, who served as union minister in the previous Congress-led governments, has been a top contender for the chief minister post ever since his party won against the ruling BJP, which was in power in this central Indian state for 15 years.
