Kolkata: Elections might be over and West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee might have faced the biggest ever political embarrassment to her hegemony as she lost huge ground to the BJP, but the singed Trinamool chief is not done with her shenanigans, much to her own peril.
At a press conference on Saturday, May 25, she made a politically unsound remark, comparing Trinamool’s Muslim votebank to “milch cow”.
While announcing that she would be attending an Iftar (breaking of fast during the holy month of Ramzan), she said, “Since I appease Muslims, I shall attend it 100 times. If a cow yields milk, one must be prepared to face its kick.”
While this open declaration of her Muslim appeasement, which led to Hindu alienation conversely and her drubbing at the hands of newcomers to the state, BJP, her statement cut the wrong way on all sides.

While she openly accepted that Muslims are votebank, she insensitively compared them to a milch cow. On the other hand, she also proclaimed that she was ready to tolerate if that “cow” kicked.
Meanwhile, Banerjee is still reeling under the burden of huge losses to the BJP. The saffron party shocked the TMC, amid large scale poll violence to clinch 18 out of the 42 Lok Sabha seats in 2019 general elections.
Adding insult to injury, the BJP also captured four out of the eight assembly seats that had gone to by-polls along with the Lok Sabha elections. The TMC could get only three of these.
