Thrissur: Ajitha Vijayan was sworn in as the mayor of Thrissur on Wednesday. Before she was sworn in as mayor, Ajitha was known as a milk distributor in her village.

Ajitha said that she is proud to continue her milk supplying job and she has no intentions of quitting. Earlier, she represented the Kanimangalam ward. And, she was an Anganawadi teacher too.

She is also a classical dancer. She has got a dance troupe in her village, Kanimangalam. She had participated in the mega Thiruvathirakali which had made it to the Guinness Book of Records.

Ajitha is the wife of CPM leader Vijayan. He has been running a Milma booth for the past 22 years. Ajitha has been helping him for 18 years in delivering milk. She distributes milk to 200 houses in Kanimangalam. Ajitha has a daughter, who got married last month.

Ajitha said that she wishes to continue the projects started by the CPI(M), for women.

She also said that she wants to open more SheLodges in the district. And, she wants to start several other projects to make Thrissur a corporation that is completely safe and friendly for women.

Ajitha was elected as mayor after Ajitha Jayarajan of the CPI(M) resigned from the post last month as per an understanding between the CPI(M) and the CPI.

Ajitha defeated Subi Babu of the Congress in the election to the post. Ajitha polled 27 votes against 22 for Subi Babu. 

Many LDF leaders, including minister for agriculture VS Sunil Kumar, CPI(M) district secretary MM Varghese, and CPI district secretary KK Valsaraj attended the Ajitha’s swearing-in ceremony.

Addressing the council, the new mayor said she would give importance to speeding up the development work initiated by the former mayor.
