Cauvery River water sharing has been the bone of contention between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu for decades together. But Karnataka is pushing for Mekedatu dam on Cauvery River and it is said that the water flowing back into the sea can be stored in this dam and used when there is less rain. But Tamil Nadu is not happy  with the construction of Mekedatu dam.

Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy has said that Union Water Resources Minister Nitin Gadkari is likely to ink the Mekedaatu Dam.

He was speaking after meeting with Nitin Gadkari in Delhi. "The minister has responded positively for the construction of the dam. He has even given necessary circulars in this regard to the officers in the Water Resources Department. We need to get permission from the Environment Department after getting the approval of the Water Resources Ministry. A lot of time has been wasted and we will not leave any stone unturned to get it approved,” he said. 

Kumaraswamy also said that so far 346 TMC water has been released to Tamil Nadu. A lot of water has flown into the sea, which is a waste of water resource. If we can store this water, it can be used in the next year before the onset of rainy season, he said. 

But Tamil Nadu has been opposing the Mekedatu project stating that it feels Karnataka will store  more water and they might have to again request for water to be released to Tamil Nadu, if Mekedatu becomes a reality. 

However, though Mahadayi River water that has been bothering Karnataka and Goa was discussed, no promises were made in this regard, say sources.

Though the fact remains that Mekedatu can store the water that is flowing into the sea, will Tamil Nadu accept it or will it increase the tension between the neighbouring states?
