Watch: Nation shocked as Kolkata’s Majerhat flyover collapses, 1 dead

Kolkata: Yet another case of flyover collapse rocks Kolkata. On Tuesday, a part of the Majerhat bridge collapsed following heavy rains.

The mishap happened on the Diamond Harbour Road at around 4:45 PM.

According to initial reports, the accident has killed at least one and injured 20. The bridge has been there for at least four decades. 

Several people are feared to be trapped under debris and authorities are expected high casualties. Locals have initiated the rescue work by moving debris with bare hands.

Traffic restrictions have been imposed in and around the area after the accident.

Meanwhile, the BJP has accused the state government of neglecting construction work. "State government should take complete responsibility of this collapse," said senior Bengal BJP leader Mukul Roy.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, on the other hand, has ordered a high-level probe.

Unfortunately, this is not the first time that such an accident happened. In 2016, an under-construction Vivekananda flyover in the Girish Park region collapsed killing 27 people and injuring more than 80.
