New Delhi: In a shocking statement during the press conference following the victory of the Congress in Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and scraping through in Madhya Pradesh, party president Rahul Gandhi tried to play down his pre-poll promise of waiving off the loans of farmers within 10 days of coming to power.
At the press conference, Gandhi said the loan waiver was a measure, not a solution to farmers’ distress.
During the Assembly election campaign in Madhya Pradesh’s Vidisha constituency, Gandhi had famously counted 10 on his fingers and said the Congress would prove that the Modi government by waiving loans of farmers within 10 days of forming the government.
Interestingly, while the BJP lost its citadel Vidisha to the Congress, Gandhi’s party failed to impress the voters of Mandsaur, which was the epicentre of farmers’ ‘movement’ in the recent past.
