Guwahati: The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), an ally in the BJP-led Assam government, has broken its alliance with the saffron party in Assam after the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) submitted their reports over The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016 before the Parliament on Monday.

AGP president Atul Bora on Monday announced that his party has decided to break alliance with the BJP.

“We are opposing the Citizenship Bill and urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union home minister Rajnath Singh not to bring this bill, which will harm Assam and the people of the state. We have already taken a decision that, if the bill is passed we will break the alliance with the BJP. The JPC has today submitted its reports over the bill before the Parliament,” Atul Bora said.

The AGP president announced the party’s decision after he met the Union home minister Rajnath Singh in New Delhi.

It is to be mentioned that the BJP formed its first government in Assam in 2016 with the support of the AGP and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF).

At present, BJP has 62 seats in the 126-member Assam Legislative Assembly. The Congress has 25 seats while AGP has 14. The BPF won 12 and 13 are from the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF).
