The 1972 United Nations Conference on the Human Environment in Stockholm marked the beginning of worldwide awareness of people's connection with other living species and our planet. It also resulted in the foundation of World Environment Day (5 June) and the UN Environment Programme.

At the 1992 Rio de Janeiro Earth Summit, Agenda 21, the Rio Declaration on Environment and Development, and the Statement of Principles for the Sustainable Management of Forests were adopted, marking key milestones. This was the first big conference to focus on sustainable development.
