Every driving license holder knows how strenuous the process is for acquiring a DL. Driving without a license is against the law and can lead to fines. If your driving license has expired or is nearing its expiry date, then you must acquaint yourself with the steps to renew it promptly. If you don’t renew your driving license for more than five years, and you will be required to apply for a new driving license. Following these simple steps, you can easily get it renewed in a matter of few days. 

Grace period

When your driving license expires, you get a period of 30 days for renewal. If it is not renewed in this timeframe, a fine will be imposed. Therefore, you must be diligent with the renewal process of your DL.

To renew your driving license, you will need the following documents:

1. Existing Driving License (DL)
2. Completed Application Form 2
3. Form No 1 or Form 1A, as applicable
4. Self-attested copies of passport-size photographs
5. Self-attested copies of age and address proof documents
6. Medical certificate, if you are above 40 years of age

Follow these steps to apply for the renewal of your driving license

1. Visit the website sarathi.parivahan.gov.in.
2. Select your state.
3. Click on the ‘Service on Driving License’ option.
4. Download the required application forms from the website. 
5. Upload the necessary documents.
6. Pay the fees online. 

Fees to pay

If you apply for the renewal of your DL within the grace period of 30 days, then you will have to pay a fee of Rs 400. However, if you fail to renew it within the grace period, a fee of Rs 1500 will be applicable. To avoid the additional charges, renew your DL within the mentioned period. 

Validity of DL

Typically, the validity of a driving license is 20 years. However, if you are above the age of 40, then your license will have a validity of only 5 years. You can expect to receive your renewed DL within 20-40 days at your registered postal address.
