The Story of Dhanteras

According to religious scriptures, the gods and demons conspired to churn the ocean in order to extract hidden wealth and amrita. They used Vasuki Naga as the rope and Mount Mandara as the churning stick. From this churning emerged many treasures, including Apsaras, the Airavat elephant, the Kaustubh Mani, Goddess Lakshmi, and the Uchchaihshravas horse. Ultimately, Lord Dhanvantari appeared with the pot of nectar (amrita). This led to a fierce battle between the gods and demons over the nectar, which lasted for 12 years. Lord Vishnu, taking the form of Mohini, distributed the nectar to the gods, leaving the demons empty-handed. After consuming the nectar, the gods triumphed over the demons. It is believed that Lord Dhanvantari emerged with the pot of nectar on Kartik Krishna Trayodashi Tithi, which is why Dhanteras is celebrated annually on this date.
