A recent video of Chinese tourists supposedly doing Garba is going viral as Gujrati dancer Dhruv Doctor tells us about Garba Salsa
The traditional Gujarati dance, Garba, is a huge crowd-puller across the country and with Navratri just around the corner, everyone seems to be in the mood to dance.
Chairman of the Mahindra conglomerate, Anand Mahindra, sparked the flame on Sunday by posting a video of Chinese tourist doing Garba. The video is now going viral even though many including Anand have pointed out that the video may just be doctored with dandiya music placed instead of the original music.
This made me smile again. The post came with the caption: “Chinese Garba.” Well the music may have been grafted on to some random Chinese dance but with Navratri around the corner, it’s nice to imagine hordes of chinese tourists dancing along with us...😊 pic.twitter.com/7878TNm5Md

However, this is not the only westernisation of the Gujarati dance that has gone viral. Dancer and choreographer, Dhruv Doctor, the man behind the Garba Salsa also has many viral videos under his belt. "I started this fusion salsa style to create something new. I had just shot that video as a marketing tool and uploaded it on social media. It went viral and got over 20 million views," he says.
This time, the Surat-based dancer is bringing back the Caribbean-Gujrati mashup with a dance meant for three people, unlike the previous couple Garba Salsa. He says, "It is not that difficult but I just need 4 hours to teach this to a non-dancer."
In case, you don't have your outfit ready, this form of Garba can be done in "semi-traditional with matching kurta with jeans for the dancing couples to suit the Indo-western vibe", as Doctor says.
