In what comes as a surprise, the Mayawati-led BSP has decided not have a tie-up with the JD(S). This means, both Congress and the JD(S) will not have the support of the BSP in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls. Mayawati feels it is better fighting it out all alone, instead of having alliances.
Bengaluru: On the one hand, the Congress and the JD(S) may have joined hands, with an obvious bid to halt the Modi juggernaut, but on the other, the two parties might feel the pinch! But why? Well, that’s because the Mayawati-led BSP has decided to treat the two parties as untouchables.
There are no prizes for guessing that it is next to impossible even to think of handing over defeat to Narendra Modi without alliances or tie ups. A case in point is the Mahagatbandhan, where a number of leaders have decided to come on one stage and hand over an ignominious defeat to Modi. On the lines of the Mahagathbandhan, the Congress hoped that Mayawati would extend a cordial invitation for a tie up. Similar was the case with Janata Dal (Secular) as well in the state of Karnataka.
While the Congress and the JD(S) have finalised the seat-sharing formula, the BSP has refused to join hands with both the parties.
The BSP had one seat in Kollegal (N Mahesh). He was given the higher education portfolio as well. But he resigned within a matter of a few months. Now, with Lok Sabha elections approaching, JD(S) continues to be a persona-non-grata!
“We have no tie-ups. We are not tying up with the Congress or the JD(S). Even at the national level, we are going all alone. Our leader Mayawati has strictly instructed us not to forge any tie-ups. For us, not having an alliance will have no impact. We had limited seats in the Assembly elections held last year in Karnataka. Though we won one seat, we didn’t know our real strengths. This time, we will contest all the 28 Lok Sabha constituencies in the state of Karnataka,” says Hariram, the state president of the BSP.
This would certainly come as a shock for the JD(S) which is looking for more tie-ups.
It might be recalled that Mayawati had flown down from Lucknow to be a part of the swearing-in ceremony of HD Kumaraswamy. They all had displayed a lot of unity, but now, there is a palpable shift.
