When Samadhan Galande from Maharashtra was just 15 years old and in class 10, his father passed away. His father had been the sole breadwinner and after his demise, managing the household became challenging. In this tough situation, Samadhan's mother took on the responsibility and firmly insisted that he continue his education. Even though her health was poor, she worked in farming to support the family.

Background

Due to financial constraints, Samadhan Galande couldn't pursue science subjects in class 12. Living in Marathwada, a drought-stricken area of Maharashtra, his family had no source of income other than daily wage labour and farming. Despite scoring 81 percent in class 10 and wanting to study science in class 12, which required travelling to Latur, his mother couldn't afford the expense. She advised him to do what was feasible given their situation. Considering their financial condition, Samadhan enrolled in a school in nearby Barshi, with his mother sending him around Rs 1500 each month for expenses.

Mother’s support

Samadhan's mother struggled to provide financial support. According to reports, she would often borrow money to support him. Faced with these challenges, Samadhan decided to complete class 10 and then return to his village to help his mother. Consequently, he had to come back and enrol in a school in Beed for his class 12.

A bright student

While helping his mother and facing criticism from others, Samadhan managed to score 72 percent in his class 12. He was eligible for a pharmacy course based on the common entrance test but couldn't afford the high fees. Instead, he enrolled in Fergusson College in Pune for higher education. However, his weak English skills led to failures in some first-year subjects, prompting him to consider returning home. At this juncture, his friends offered support.

Friends' support

With encouragement from his friends, Samadhan improved his English and began to grasp his subjects better. After graduating, he started his post-graduation studies. His mother's health worsened, and he considered quitting his studies to return home. During this difficult time, his friends provided crucial financial support to help him continue.

Winning a scholarship

Samadhan's perseverance ultimately paid off when he received the Young India Fellowship from Ashoka University, worth Rs 14 lakh. This fellowship was a pivotal moment in his life. His journey serves as an inspiration for those who might consider giving up due to challenging circumstances, demonstrating that determination and will can help you achieve any goal.
